The Sequim High School equestrian team earned 40 top-20 finishes — including 17 in the top 10 — in their first meet of the 2017 Washington State High School Equestrian Team (WAHSET) season, held Jan. 27-29 in Tacoma.

Among top individual efforts were Abi Payseno’s fourth-place finish in poles, Grace Niemeyer’s fourth-place finish in dressage and Sydney Balkan’s sixth-place finish in flags.

In team events, Sequim’s Drill Fours team — Balkan, Madi Murphy, Amy Tucker and Miranda Williams — took second place, Balkan and Tucker placed third in Team Sorting, and Emelie Fürste and Amanda Murphy placed fifth in Working Pairs.

The team’s second meet of the season is Feb. 24-26 and third (and final) district meet is March 24-26; both are in Tacoma.

Sequim, which boasts 13 participants this season, competes against more than 90 athletes from nine schools in the district.

“Our girls did great,” coach Katie Salmon-Newton said. “Several of them were competing in WAHSET for the first time.”
