A figure that loomed large on Sequim High basketball courts, Josh McConnaughey now plays the post for Olympic College’s Rangers in Bremerton.
The 6-foot 8-inch McConnaughey, a 2015 SHS graduate, scored his first collegiate basket against South Puget Sound on Jan. 2. He had three rebounds and a block in 16 minutes against Clackamas on Dec. 18 and set highs of four points and five rebounds in just nine minutes as the Rangers beat Centralia 72-65 on Jan. 4.
Despite struggling overall (6-10), the Rangers are 4-1 in conference play after a win against Everett on Jan. 23.
McConnaughey averaged 3.8 rebounds per game and had 22 blocks — second on the squad — as a senior with SHS’s Wolves in 2014-2015. As a junior, he nabbed 3.6 boards per game and had 26 blocks.
