Suddenly, the Wolves are the hunters instead of the hunted.

A pair of losses to Olympic League rivals last week has Sequim scrambling to keep pace with league leader Port Angeles and the resurgent Olympic Trojans.

After topping the Trojans on April 22 (8-5), Sequim dropped a 15-4 decision to Olympic on April 26.

It was SHS’s biggest defeat since March of 2014 — a 15-0 loss to Anacortes — and one they can pinpoint to a 15-hit Olympic barrage and untimely errors that led to two big innings.

Tied at 1-1, Olympic erupted for six runs in the third inning. Following a hit batter and error, the Trojans smacked four consecutive hits off starter McKenzie Bentz.

Sequim chipped away at Olympic’s lead as Emily Copeland drove in a pair of runs, but three Sequim errors and five base hits plated seven Olympic runs in the fifth inning.

Kaylee Gumm had a double and RBI, and Adrienne Haggerty had two steals in the loss.

A day later against Port Angeles, the Wolves were simply overpowered by Roughrider starter Nizhoni Wheeler, who allowed just one hit — a fourth inning double by Allysen Montelius — and struck out 13 while walking just one in a 7-0 Port Angeles win.

Lauren Lunt was 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Kylee Reid and Wheeler had two hits each for PA, who remained undefeated both in league play and overall.

Bentz went the distance for the Wolves, giving up 11 hits and three earned runs and striking out two.

Sequim rebounded with a 7-4 win at home against Kingston on April 29. Bentz went all seven innings, giving up four unearned runs on five hits while striking out five. At the plate, Bentz was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs, and Nicole Anders added two hits and drove in two.

Looking ahead

Sequim was scheduled to play at North Mason on May 3 — results were not available at press time.

The Wolves are at North Kitsap on May 5 and play at Port Angeles on May 10 for the teams’ annual “Pink It Up” game that brings awareness to the fight against breast cancer.

Sequim finishes the regular season May 12 at Kingston before heading into the West Central District tournament.
