When the momentum in this game finally swung, it was all in Sequim’s favor.

Black Hills battled back from a 5-0 deficit to cut Sequim’s lead to one, but a barrage of late-game hits fueled SHS’s 14-4 win against the visiting Wolves on April 15.

“The first couple of innings we hit the ball well; then we went flat,” Sequim coach Mike McFarlen said. “Then the girls hit the ball really well (late in the game).”

McKenzie Bentz had four of Sequim’s 17 hits, going the distance on the mound, giving up eight hits and two earned runs in six innings.

Sequim jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by Nicole Anders’ two-run double, and made it 5-0 on Allysen Montelius’ run-scoring two-bagger.

But Black Hills came back with runs in the third and fourth, and two in the fifth. Sar Payne, hitting No. 9 in the lineup, had a solo home run off Bentz and drove in a run in the fifth.

Sequim erupted for five runs in the fifth inning and another four runs in the sixth. Emily Copeland had an RBI triple and Jordan Bentz hit twice in the inning, picking up a single and walk.

“This was really a test for us,” said Sequim first baseman Kaylee Gumm, who had two hits in the win.

“We’re really working on playing well as a team,” she said. “We’re focusing on (honing) all of our skill sets.”

Wolves rout Redhawks

Pardon McKenzie Bentz if she catches her breath.

The Sequim hurler and leadoff hitter had four hits — including two first-inning triples — and tossed two perfect innings in a 16-0 Sequim rout at Port Townsend on April 14.

The Wolves made quick work of the overmatched Redhawks, scoring nine runs in the first inning and another five in the third. Sequim had 14 hits and drew eight walks in their biggest offensive output of the season to date.

“We have a tendency to play to other team’s levels (but) we’ve kind of stopped doing that,” McFarlen said.

Bentz, Montelius and Shelby Jones combined to toss five hitless innings, giving up two walks and striking out 10.

Jordan Bentz was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Gumm had a two-run home run to center field in the third inning. Kyla Rigg had a double in her only plate appearance and Montelius had a triple.

Bats light up vs. Bulldogs

This one was over quickly.

Sequim’s bats erupted for 10 runs in the second inning in a mercy rule-shortened, 13-0 home victory against North Mason on April 12.

Montelius and Adrienne Haggerty had two hits each in the nine-hit Sequim attack that also featured seven walks. Haggerty drove in three runs and Montelius drove in two.

The offense was more than enough for a trio of Sequim pitchers, as McKenzie Bentz (two innings), Shelby Jones (two) and Montelius (one) held the Bulldogs to just one hit and one walk and eight strikeouts.

Looking ahead

The Wolves were scheduled to host Bremerton on April 19 — results were not available for this section’s press time. Sequim is at North Kitsap on April 21 and Olympic on April 22, then host those same Trojans on April 26. Sequim hosts rival Port Angeles on April 27 and Kingston on April 29.
