Fastpitch: Sequim stays perfect, tops Olympic and P.T.

A sloppy game in wet conditions forced Sequim's fastpitch squad into a season-high six errors. Fortunately their bats more than made up for it.

A sloppy game in wet conditions forced Sequim’s fastpitch squad into a season-high six errors.

Fortunately their bats more than made up for it.

Sequim scored nine runs in the second inning and seven in the third as they romped over North Kitsap 17-4 in a mercy rule-shortened win on April 8.

In their first game back from spring break, the Wolves showed a bit of rust in the field with six miscues, hampered by a drizzling rain. But Sequim’s bats battered Viking pitching for 15 hits, including a double and home run from Olivia Kirsch, who was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

MaryLu Clift had a double, triple and two RBIs while teammate Alexas Besand drove in four runs.

Tia Bourm, Alysen Montelius and Melissa Lewis each had two hits.

Makayla Bentz worked three innings on the mound to improve to 5-0 on the season, striking out four and giving up just one hit, one walk and an unearned run. Lewis worked the final two innings, striking out three.

The Wolves (6-0 in Olympic League, 8-1 overall) followed that with a 15-0 whitewashing of Port Townsend on the road on April 10.

McKenzie Bentz went all five innings, giving up just three hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Sequim tallied nine hits — eight singles and Clift’s home run — and took advantage of eight walks and seven Redskin errors.

McKenzie Bentz was 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs while sister Makayla was 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Clift and Shelby Lott had three RBIs each.

The Wolves were slated to play at North Mason on April 14, the second of six consecutive away games. Sequim is at Kingston on April 18 and at North Kitsap on April 21.

Sequim’s next home game is April 28 against Port Angeles.
