Port Angeles may have feasted on foes for the Olympic League title, but their peninsula neighbors have a slightly better spot at the table at the state tourney.
Sequim’s fastpitch squad earned a pair of wins to kick off the West Central District tournament last week to earn an automatic berth at the class 2A state tournament, set for May 29-30 in Selah.
With the district’s No. 4 seed, the Wolves (15-7) open the state tourney at noon Friday against Othello (18-3), who took second at state last season.
In the West Central District opener on May 22, Sequim topped Steilacoom 7-4, then upset KingCo favorite Liberty 5-4 in the quarterfinals. A day later, after falling behind 5-0 to eventual district champion White River, Sequim came back to tally four runs in the bottom of the seventh only to see their upset bid fall short, 5-4. The Wolves fell to Fife, 7-0, in the third/fourth place contest later that day.
Sequim went 1-2 at last season’s state tourney. The Wolves are making their fifth consecutive state playoff appearance and seventh in the past nine seasons. They won the school’s only softball team title in 2011 and placed fourth in 2012.
Port Angeles (20-1), the district’s No. 5 seed, opens state at noon Friday against WF West (19-3).
