What a night to forget.

Those in the Sequim boys’ basketball camp had to figure Friday night’s match-up with Bremerton would be a tough contest to win, what with injuries and flu that gave the Wolves only three varsity players able to practice.

They figured correctly.

Bremerton’s longer, taller and more energized boys team ran roughshod over the Wolves, racing to an early 26-6 lead and a 70-46 Olympic League victory on Jan. 23.

"We came out too flat,"

Sequim coach Greg Glasser said. "They shot lights-out in the

first quarter."

With starter Clancy Catelli out thanks to a foot injury, the Wolves (3-7 in league, 6-8 overall) got a spell of the flu that struck four players following Jan. 20’s thrilling, one-point win against Klahowya. Starters Ary Webb, Jeremie Oliver, John Textor and Taylor Thorson all played Friday night, although their battle with the flu didn’t help with their war with the Knights.

Bremerton was up 16-2 before the halfway mark in the first quarter and kept the pressure

on, forcing the Wolves into uncharacteristic half-court errors.

Sequim responded with a solid second half, posting a 13-10 advantage in the third quarter and getting outscored by one point, 24-23.

Webb led Sequim with 18 points and three assists while Oliver added 10 points. The Wolves, however, managed just four steals and 14 rebounds in 32 minutes of play.

Glasser said he was impressed with Sequim freshman Glen Skillings, a junior varsity player who attacked bigger Bremerton post players with energy.

"(He was) one of the few guys on our team who was not intimidated," Glasser said.

Moore-less Eagles

One team’s loss is another’s gain. With Klahowya star guard Andre Moore on the bench for the first quarter, Sequim took full advantage Tuesday night, running up a 20-7 advantage and holding on for a 50-49 win.

The Wolves’ win was a crucial one, keeping Sequim within a game of the Eagles in the Olympic League 2A standings.

"It was a coach’s decision – I don’t know why (Andre was out)," Glasser said.

With the speedy Moore riding pine the first eight minutes, Sequim built a 13-point lead. Moore came off the bench for 13 points in the second quarter to close the gap to 33-26 by halftime and 41-39 after three quarters.

After a seesaw fourth quarter, Sequim gained possession with five seconds left in a 49-49 tie. Webb, the Wolves’ leading scorer, got fouled on a pump fake and hit one of two free throws.

Knowing the ball would likely go to Moore, who finished with 27 points to lead all scorers, Glasser assigned Omdal to guard the high-flying Eagle.

Moore never saw the ball, and Klahowya’s Jeff Wasson, who hadn’t scored a point all evening, forced a shot that missed at the buzzer.

Textor led Sequim with 13 points and seven rebounds while Catelli added 10 points.
