Sequim squandered three chances for a potential game-winning touchdown in the final quarter as the Olympic Trojans hung on for a 13-7 victory Friday night at Silverdale Stadium.
The hometown team led 13-0 at intermission after intercepting Sequim quarterbacks four times in the first 24 minutes.
Olympic’s Brian Tyson received a 31-yard jump ball from quarterback Zack Thornton for a 6-0 Trojans lead with 7:30 left in the opening quarter.
Tyson had the Trojans’ only two receptions of the game for 40 yards.
An interception of Sequim backup Nick Faunce set up Olympic’s second touchdown drive with the eight-play, 38-yard march capped by a three-yard Makiah McInnis run with 4:50 remaining until halftime.
McInnis carried the ball 12 times for 32 yards.
After intermission, Sequim’s defense tightened up, holding Olympic to just 53 second-half yards.
A blocked Olympic punt gave Sequim possession at the Wolves 40 with 1:49 left in the third period.
Sequim (0-3 in Olympic League play, 0-5 overall) drove 60 yards in five plays, finishing on a 28-yard scoring strike from Jack Wiker to Christian Miles, closing the gap to 13-7 with 11:53 remaining.
Miles caught three passes for 59 yards.
Moments later, Miles intercepted Thornton and returned it 33 yards to the Olympic 20, where a 10-yard clipping penalty left Sequim knocking at the door on the Trojans 10.
Squandered opportunities
However, the Wolves came up empty after Lopaka Yasumura’s catch of a screen pass gained just 2 yards on 4th-and-goal from the Olympic 9-yard-line.
Sequim got a final chance for victory starting at its own 34-yard-line with 2:18 to go.
Wiker drove the Wolves into Olympic territory, hitting Miles for 16 yards, Jon Donahue twice for 15 yards and another 13-yarder to Yasumura.
Yasumura had six catches for 45 yards and rushed six times for 19 yards.
With 1:11 remaining, Sequim was flagged 15 yards for illegal batting when Wiker attempted to tip a fumbled ball to lineman Andrew Shimer.
Wiker’s final two passes from the Trojans 36 fell incomplete and Olympic QB Thornton took two kneel-downs to run out the clock.
Wiker completed 15-of-30 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown, but was intercepted three times.
Sequim outgained Olympic 221-156.
Bucs stop here
The Wolves take on Kingston’s Buccaneers on Friday night, the second of just three home games for Sequim.
Kingston (2-1 in league, 2-3 overall) is coming off a 20-13 road loss at North Mason.
Nick Tabanera is Kingston’s featured back; he ran for 248 yards and four touchdowns against Klahowya in week three. Aaron Dickson is Kingston’s No. 2 back and Booby Reece handles snaps as quarterback.
Last season, Sequim earned a 27-13 win at home against the Buccaneers, needing a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns, the second an 80-yard scamper by Jack Wiker.
Sequim has never lost to Kingston since the program started in 2007.
