Girls basketball: 3A Spartans spoil SHS opener

A night of cold shooting and turnovers spoiled Sequim’s season-opener as they fell 51-48 to the 3A Bainbridge Spartans on the road on Dec. 8.

“The girls played hard, but Bainbridge made more plays in the end to close out the game,” Sequim coach Joclin Julmist said. “We were in foul trouble for most of the game and limited the way we wanted to play.”

Freshman sensation Gracie Chartraw had 24 points and six rebounds as the Wolves held a 13-8 lead after one quarter, but the Spartans slowly pulled away for the non-league win.

“[Gracie] was special at times; she shot the ball well from the field and did a good job hitting the boards,” Julmist said.

Jolene Vaara had 12 points and played solid defense, Julmist said, while teammate Dani Herman added five points and 12 rebounds.

Sequim had 22 turnovers, however, and shot just 13-of-30 (43.3%) from the free throw line and 15-of-49 (30.6%) from the field.
