Girls Basketball: Squad struggles against Bainbridge, N. Mason

The Sequim girls varsity basketball squad looks to rebound from losses after an injury and illness kept players out during two losses last week.

The Wolves (2-8 Olympic League, 3-11 overall) lost 38-28 to North Mason on Jan. 21 and 76-22 in Bainbridge on Jan. 24.

Sequim Head Coach Joclin Julmist said the loss to the Bulldogs was tough as Sequim struggled rebounding, making shots and taking care of the ball.

Sequim led 10-9 after the first quarter, but the Bulldogs led the remainder as the Wolves struggled to score in the second and third quarters.

Junior Hailey Wagner had 11 points, 12 rebounds and three steals, while teammate and senior Libby Turella scored seven points and snagged nine rebounds. Kiley Winter and Kaiya Robinson each snagged three steals each. The Wolves shot 2-24 from 3-pointers, and 11-49 overall.

Against Bainbridge, the Wolves were without two starters in a lopsided 76-22 loss with Wagner injured, and Gracie Chartraw out sick, Julmist said.

He said the “girls worked hard (but) we were short-handed,” he said.

The Spartans outscored the Wolves’ total score with their first quarter output, 26-3.

Robinson, a freshman, led the Wolves with nine points (three 3-pointers) and four rebounds, and Libby Turella had seven points, five rebounds and two assists.

This week, Sequim was set to travel to and play the Olympic Trojans on Jan. 28, and they’ll host Port Angeles at 5:15 p.m. on Friday. Earlier this season, the Wolves lost to Olympic 45-42 earlier this month, and 47-34 to Port Angeles.
