Girls soccer: Sequim earns split versus Bulldogs, Spartans

A change in tactics produced plenty of offense for the Wolves in an Olympic League road win, SHS’s first of the season.

Sophomore Sasha Yada and junior Raimey Brewer each tallied two goals for Sequim as the Wolves romped over host North Mason 5-0 on Sept. 17.

“A really great team performance,” SHS coach Haley Sue Freeman said.

“We played in a new formation and the girls really took to it and were making some great connections.

“We’ve been working on it in practice and felt comfortable. We have a lot of talented midfielders on the team, so it was more midfielder based but it involves the whole team getting in transition and everybody working.”

Kiley Winter notched the Wolves’ first goal early on.

“We got started super early maybe the first five minutes we had a shot from the right side by Kiley Winter, a great shot that really set the tone for the game,” Freeman said.

Amara Gonzalez assisted on one of Yada’s scores.

“Amara put a great ball in, Sasha turned on her defender and put it in,” Freeman said.

Kalli Grove earned the shutout in goal.

“Our back line of Harper Moore, Libby Turella, Amara and Hailey Wagner really played lock down defense,” Freeman said.

Spartans prevail

Two days later at home, the Wolves hung tough with the visiting Bainbridge Spartans but conceded two second half goals in a 2-0 loss on Sept. 19.

“We learned the importance of teamwork and communication,” Freeman said following the loss.

“I feel like they hustled. They worked hard until the final whistle.”

The first-year SHS coach noted the Wolves were missing a couple of players and had a thin bench while the Spartans had good numbers in reserve.

“I’m excited to play them again [on Oct. 15] with a full roster,” she said.

She said the Wolves (1-2 in Olympic League and overall) need to get a bit better with 50-50 chances.

The Wolves, who opened the season with a 1-0 loss on penalty kicks at Kingston on Sept. 12, were scheduled to play at Olympic (Silverdale) on Sept. 24 — results were not available at press time.
