Sequim scored inside the first five minutes and the Wolves went on to cruise to a 5-0 Olympic League girls soccer win over Olympic at home Thursday, Oct. 17.
“We played great as a team,” coach Haley Sue Freeman said. “Our offense and midfield really shined, and our back line held it down for us.”
Kiley Winter converted on a penalty kick in the fourth minute after being taken down by the Trojans in the left corner of the field.
“We had a few exceptional players — Kiley Winter played on every line and was eager to keep in the game. She scored our first goal of the night, setting us up for success. She has a great team mentality and will do what is best for the team,” Freeman said.
Winter also recorded assists on two other Sequim scores.
Sasha Yada had a pair of goals to lead the Wolves.
“Our other goals were from Sasha Yada, Raimey Brewer and Ruby Moxley-Horgan,” Freeman said. “They all brought offensive power and charisma to the game.”
Harper Moore and Laila Sundin also recorded assists in the win.
Kalli Grove earned the shutout in goal.
Bainbridge 3, Sequim 0
The Sequim girls soccer team kept league-leading and fifth-ranked Bainbridge in check much of the night in a 3-0 loss on Oct. 15.
“I think they put up a good fight,” coach Freeman said. “Every single player on the team worked super hard. [Bainbridge] is super talented. They’re a first-place team for a reason.”
The Spartans scored two goals in the first half and Sequim allowed just one goal in the second half.
Freeman thought Amara Gonzalez played well in the center back position and Grove played well in goal. She made 12 saves on 15 shots on goal.
She said Yada played hard at forward for the Wolves and that Moore on the outside back was busy with Bainbridge’s forwards all night.
“She played so hard. She was being overloaded all night and held down her side of the field,” Freeman said.
Look ahead
Sequim (4-6) was set to visit rival Port Angeles (6-5, 6-6) in a crucial Olympic League contest at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The Roughriders edged Sequim 3-2 in overtime in September. The Wolves then play Friday night in North Kitsap.
