Sequim High sophomore Calleigh Thompson doubles the Wolves’ entries in the state tennis tournament set for later this week after battling to a fourth-place finish at the West Central District bi-district tourney, held May 17-18 at the Kitsap Tennis Athletic Club in Bremerton.
Thompson, who placed second at the Olympic League tourney, went 2-2 at the district tourney and advances the the class 2A state tourney set for May 24-25 at the Nordstrom tennis Center in Seattle, where she’ll join classmate Garrett Little, a senior seeking another top finish in the 2A state boys tourney. She will open the state tourney against Anna Samoukovic of Lynden.
Thompson, seeded No. 2 out of the Olympic League, opened districts with a three-set win over Michelle Arjona-Reyes of Renton, the SeaKing No. 4 seed, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. She sealed a state berth in the quarterfinals with a 6-3,6-3 win over Jasmyn Sharp of Washington, the No. 5 seed from the South Puget Sound League (SPSL), before falling in straight sets to the eventual district champ, Taranah Khalighi of Sammamish.
Thompson fell 6-3, 7-5 to the SPSL’s top seed, Cydnee Chapin of White River, in the third/fourth place match.
Thompson, who went 14-5 and placed fifth at league as a freshman, is 13-7 in singles play this season.
Little, the runner-up at the West Central Bi-district tourney in October, had for four years dominated league play. He went undefeated in more than 40 league singles matches, and accumulated a 28-4 postseason record, three league titles, a West Central District crown and back-to-back top-three finishes at state.
Little will open the state tourney against Owen Vellegas of Sedro-Woolley.
