Sequim’s girls tennis team nearly took down the Olympic League’s top team last week, again.
The second place Wolves (9-4 overall) lost four of seven matches on April 25 to North Kitsap (11-1) repeating a similar matchup on April 12 at home where they lost 4-3 to the Vikings, too.
Standouts for the Wolves included No. 2 singles Izzy Hugoniot winning 6-1, 6-2 over Grace Hansen and Katey Wake, No. 3 singles, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Isla Lester. Sequim’s No. 3 doubles team Amanda He and Deratú Francis also defeated Briana Ryan and Jaminson Jacobson 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
Despite both teams playing two matches this week, North Kitsap clinches the Olympic League title. Sequim will need to win at least win one of two matches to outpace Olympic (7-2 in league) and Kingston (7-3).
The Wolves’ May 1 match with Chimacum (0-6) was postponed because of poor weather; a makeup date has not been determined.
Sequim plays at Olympic on Thursday to finish the regular season.
The Olympic League Championships go May 10-11 in Bremerton.
Last week, Sequim continued its success against rival Port Angeles on April 26 with a 4-3 win.
Hugoniot earned another win, this time playing No. 1 singles, against Audrey Little 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Sequim’s No. 1-3 doubles teams all won, too, with Hannah D’amico and Jessica Dietzman winning 6-1, 6-0 over Hannah Brown and Saige Helton; Ella Christiansen and Ashley Rosales winning 6-1, 6-0 over Paulina Crawford and Jocelyn Reifenstahl; and Francis and He winning 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) over Shanzi Cosgrove and Claire Fritschler.
The Roughriders kept games close though winning three matches.
Port Angeles’ Summer Olsen, No. 2 singles, won 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 over Sequim’s Wake, and the Roughriders’ Hailey Horton won 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 over Emily Bundy. Port Angeles’ No. 4 doubles team Kailey Croz and Madison Saiz also won 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 10-3 in a tiebreaker over Amber Dietzman and Arlene Law.
