Sequim’s girls tennis squad remains atop the Olympic League standings despite suffering its first league loss last week.
Thanks to kind weather and spring scheduling, the Wolves (3-1 in league, 5-1 overall) have finished more matches than any other league team, going 2-1 last week following spring break.
Sequim opened with a key, 4-3 win against Bremerton on April 9, sweeping all four doubles matches. Karen Chan and Melanie Guan led the team with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing of Knights Merissa Delazerda and Sierra Williams, while Irene Ponce and Cheyenne Sokkoppa added a straight-set win in No. 2 doubles play.
On April 10, Olympic’s Trojans upended the previously unbeaten Wolves 5-2, sweeping three singles matches and earning wins in No. 3 and No. 4 doubles matches. Chan and Guan again posted a win for Sequim in No. 1 doubles while Maggie Christie and Heidi Stallman won in straight sets in No. 2 doubles.
Sequim rebounded with a 6-1 win against shorthanded Klahowya on April 11, losing only in No. 1 doubles play. Sokkappa and Hannah Gauthun won in singles while Christie and Stallman joined Mia Amaranto and Alina Moeller with wins in doubles play. Klahowya forfeited two matches, lacking enough players.
Sequim was slated to take on North Kitsap today, April 15. The Wolves are at North Mason on April 17 and host Kingston on April 22.
