A bit of a breeze didn’t stop these Wolves from defending their home turf.
Sequim’s boys golf team got strong efforts from Carter Cronin and Lars Wiker in a 20-shot win over Olympic (169-189) on April 26 at Sequim’s The Cedars at Dungeness golf course.
Cronin earned medalist honors with a round of 40, highlighted by “a great punch-out” from a tricky situation on hole 6 and a nice save for par on the following hole, SHS coach Sean O’Mera said.
Wiker shot a career-low round of 41, thanks to what O’Mera said was overall a combination of good solid ball striking. He drained an 8-footer for par on the first hole and a “slippery 9-footer” for par on number 9. In between he had two great saves on par-3 holes, O’Mera said.
Despite a triple-bogey on the second hole, Zack Thompson shot a 43. Cole Smithson had a solid first six holes and finished with a 45, and teammate Kyle Sharpe fired a 48.
“Kyle has been really grinding on a swing change, and it is beginning to pay dividends,” O’Mera said.
Sequim’s boys (4-4) and girls (5-3) were scheduled to play at North Kitsap on April 27 and to host Bremerton on May 2; results were not posted as of press time.
The Wolves play at the Viking Mixed Invitational in Port Ludlow on May 4.
Sequim is at the Olympic League tournament on May 8 in Kingston. Top golfers secure berths at the state 2A meet later this month, and others qualifying for the West Central District tournament set for May 16.
