Golf: Quartet keeps SHS streak alive, tops Kingston

Kingston gave the Wolves a scare, but Sequim’s boys golf team’s 55-match win streak remains intact after a 158-167 win over the visiting Buccaneers on March 30.

All four Wolves shot 42 or lower over the nine holes on a cold and windy day of play at The Cedars at Dungeness.

Sequim coach Sean O’Mera said his team, who had just four players available, got a clutch effort from Cole Smithson to remain unbeaten (5-0).

The Sequim junior shot a 42 for a career-low round.

“That is even more impressive when you know that Cole didn’t play great today: he was just solid,” O’Mera said. “He has worked really hard on his wedges and longer clubs, and that work payed off in a major way today. Other than one shot that cost him a triple (bogey) on hole 9, Cole effectively eliminated the big misses, which really lowered his score.”

Ben Sweet led the Wolves with a one-over-par 37, making two birdies against a double bogey and a bogey.

“Ben stayed strong mentally, battling both the wind and frustration with the newly-punched greens,” O’Mera said.

Dominic Riccobene and Pryce Glasser backed that effort with rounds of 39 and 40, respectively.

“Both did not have their best games today, yet, as all good players do, they shot respectable rounds,” O’Mera said. “I am proud of both of them for sticking with it to get the most out of what could have been higher scores.”

Kingston’s Orlando Chiquiti was medalist for the day with an even-par 36.

“That is great score, especially considering the wind, cold, and punched greens,” O’Mera said.

Sequim’s girls also hosted Kingston; match scores were not available at press time.
