The Wolves’ girls golf team took a rare disqualification against rival Port Angeles on April 29.

Head coach Garrett Smithson said in his eight years he’s never had to forfeit due to not having enough players. He said the Wolves No. 1 golfer Alex McMenamin injured her back in training and is week to week while Brianna Kettel, Sequim’s No. 2, is healing from strep throat. Their No. 7 golfer Sydney Porlier also was unavailable.

“We still have a shot at the league title,” Smithson said. “We would be first place as a team if we beat Kingston (7-0) on Wednesday. They have a pretty consistent one through five golfers.”

For the Olympic League title, Sequim travels to White Horse Golf Course on May 7, which Smith said is the toughest course the girls will have played on all season.

But the Wolves’ other golfers played some of their best golf, Smithson said.

At the Peninsula Golf Club, Kailee Price shot her best round of the year with 50 and Megan O’ Mera (58.5) and Kelly Anders (66) bested their averages.

“We’re doing it. It’s just a bummer we didn’t have our whole team,” Smithson said.

For Port Angeles, Dana Fox shot a 40 to lead all golfers and Chloe Brown shot a 56, Hannah Almaden a 61 and Maddie Boe a 62.

Priest and Shea lead Wolves at invites

Sequim’s boys played in a pair of invitationals last week, placing fifth in the 10-team Port Ludlow Invitational on April 29 and fifth out of seven teams at Port Angeles’ Duke Streeter Invite on May 2.

At Port Ludlow, Travis Priest and Jack Shea led the Wolves with a round of 81, followed by Alex McCracken and Henry Markham (87) and Jade Arnold and Arnold Black 105. Chimacum’s Jack Hilt and James Porter took the individual title with a round of 75 while Port Angeles won the team title, topping Chimacum by 28 shots (234 to 262).

At the Duke Streeter Invite, Central Kitsap edged Port Angeles via a tiebreaker as both teams finished at 208 strokes. Priest and Shea led Sequim (222 strokes) with a round of 68, three shots back of individual champs Alex Atwell and Micah Needham of Port Angeles. Anthony Pinza and Jesse Francis shot a 75 while Markham and McCracken shot a 79.

The boys finish their season in Kingston on Wednesday, too. The boys and girls host the Olympic League Golf Tournament on May 11.
