Before spring break, both Sequim golf teams overcame a tough course and competition to remain undefeated.
The boys (3-0 overall) defeated Kingston (1-3) at Whitehorse Golf Course 184-192 on March 28 despite everyone shooting higher scores than their averages due to the “very demanding layout,” head coach Bill Shea said.
Taking top shooter for the nine-hole challenge was senior Jack Shea at 39 followed by No. 2 Wolves’ golfer Blake Wiker at 41.
Liam Payne and Jake Sparks rounded out the team score, shooting 52 each while Jade Arnold and Joey Oliver shot 55 each.
Connor Friedel led the Buccaneers shooting a 45 followed one shot behind by Dawson Clark at 46, and Liam Young, 49, and Austin Ljunggren 52.
Despite close competition, Sequim’s girls won in Kingston, too, 207-223. Sarah Shea led the Lady Wolves shooting a 46, one behind the Buccaneers’ Kinda Smith, 45.
Sequim’s Alex McMenamin shot a 49, followed by teammates Sydney Balkan, 55, and Samantha Smith, 57. Kingston’s Cameron Friedel shot a 56, Maddie Gale a 57, and Hailey Crow a 65.
Back at The Cedars at Dungeness on March 30, Sequim’s squads defeated Port Townsend with the boys playing 18 holes for the first time this season.
Sequim’s boys won narrowly 324-334 with Jack Shea shooting 70 (34, 36) and the Redhawks’ Sebastian Thomas going No. 2 with 81 (36, 45) and Keegan Khile with 83 (43, 40) for No. 3 overall.
Wiker and Arnold both shot 84’s (42, 42 for Wiker, and 43, 41 for Arnold) and Josiah Carter came in at 86 (40, 46) while Port Townsend’s fourth varsity player Austin Khile shot an 88 (43, 45).
The Lady Wolves won by a wider margin with the varsity’s top four shooting 191-274 over the Redhawks.
McMenamin regained the No. 1 spot for the girls shooting 42 on nine holes followed by Balkan with 49, Sarah Shea and Kelly Anders with 50. Sequim’s Smith shot a 51 and Megan O’Mera a 55, too.
Port Townsend’s No. 1 shooter Greta Gamble shot a 66 followed by Kaya Wyatt at 67, Laura Mounts at 69 and Camilla Goetz at 72.
Following a week off from school, the Sequim girls host Kingston and North Kitsap on Tuesday, April 12, at The Cedars at Dungeness and the boys travel to Chimacum the same day. Both teams host North Mason on April 14.
