A deep roster has Sequim’s girls golf squad near the top of the Olympic League as it heads toward postseason play.
Calia Corden of North Kitsap took medalist honors with a 51 but a pack of Wolves — Ava Johnson (52), Emily Post (53), Raimey Brewer (54) and Kendra Dodson (55) — helped SHS dominate their road match 214-238 on April 26. Sequim improved to 5-1 in league play, tied with Port Angeles for the best 2A mark in the league, and 8-1 overall.
Sequim’s boys (3-7 overall) played NK close but fell 180-190, despite strong efforts by medalist Adrian Aragon (41) and Lars Wiker (44). Nick Watson shot a 43 to lead North Kitsap.
Johnson led a strong SHS girls effort while Sequim’s boys had a tough time with a talented Trojan squad as Sequim split matches at Olympic at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Bremerton on April 25.
Johnson earned medalist honors with a 47, Post shot a 51 and teammates Dodson and Sara German finished with 54s as SHS’s girls topped their hosts 206-240. Kiyomi McKenzie led Olympic with a 51.
On the boys’ side, Sequim’s Aragon and Olympic’s Noah Shaw tied for medalist honors (40), but Olympic got strong finishes from their other top three to defeat Sequim 178-198 — the same score and result between the two teams in their first meeting of the season on March 14. Wiker (51), Levi Breithaupt (52) and Cody Dunscomb (55) rounded out Sequim’s scorers.
Sequim golfers met some tough competition at the annual Duke Streeter Invitational, held at Port Angeles’ Peninsula Golf Club on April 23. Bainbridge claimed the top two finishes in both the boys and girls competitions with Port Angeles golfers tying for third.
On the boys’ side, Sequim’s Aragon and Dunscomb teamed to fire a 77 while Wiker and Joey Kang added an 84 for the Wolves. Bainbridge’s Dane Byers and Andrew Grinter (66) won the event, with Spartans Andrew Jones and Anderson Wickland (69) in second.
For the girls, SHS’s Johnson and Post fired an 87 and Brewer and Taryn Johnson combined to shoot an 88.
Bainbridge’s Grace Charintranont and Sara Kreigh won the Streeter going away with a 1-over-par 73, 11 strokes ahead of Spartan teammates Clarise Telschow and Clara Kang (84).
Duke Streeter worked in the timber industry, joining Peninsula Golf Club in 1960 and was known for playing and walking 72 holes a day. He recorded 18 holes-in-one in his lifetime and shot his age 24 times, the first a 69 at age 69 and the last at age 74. He was also known for his support of junior golf, particularly for gathering used balls to donate to high school and youth players.
Streeter died in 1995.
