Golf: SHS sweeps to league titles, undefeated spring seasons

Wolves can lock up state, district berths this week

For Sequim’s boys, the final hurdle to another undefeated season and league crown came by a near-100 stroke cushion.

For SHS’s girls, it was the slimmest of margins.

Regardless, the Wolves earned matching perfect seasons on the links by knocking off visiting 1A Klahowya on May 3 and take plenty of momentum into postseason play.

Sequim and other league foes were slated to square off at the Olympic League tournament, held at Sequim’s own The Cedars at Dungeness golf course, on Tuesday, May 10; results were unavailable at press time.

Top finishers at the league event advance to the state 2A tourney, while a second set of golfers earn West Central District tournament berths.

On the boys’ side Sequim simply dominated the Eagles last week, 331-427 (low score wins), to finish the season 9-0 in league play and 11-0 overall.

Despite windy conditions, Sequim High senior Jack Shea paced the Wolves with an even-par 72 for medalist honors.

Freshman Blake Wiker finished second with a round of 82 while the Wolves’ Jade Arnold was third, shooting an 84.

Sequim coach Bill Shea said he expects state berths from those top three golfers.

For the girls, Sequim’s Alex McMenamin shot a nine-hole round of 36 to earn match medalist honors and SHS needed every shot, as they edged Klahowya by a single stroke, 183-184. Samantha Smith shot a 45 to finish fourth overall for Sequim, while Sydney Balkan added a 50 and Sarah Shea shot a 52.

The Wolves’ girls finished 9-0 in league play and 10-0 overall.

Shea shoots straight at Egbers

Jack Shea shot rounds of 75 and 82 to finish in a tie for 13th at the 35th annual Bill Egbers Memorial Tournament at Skagit Golf & Country Club in Burlington on May 6.

Shea qualified as an individual after finishing atop the Olympic League leader board and the Sequim boys team qualified after taking the Olympic League title. Wiker shot an 89, Arnold and Liam Payne shot rounds of 93, and Josiah Carter finished with a 94.

Shea shot a four-over-par 71 on the morning to make the cut (84) and qualify for 18 more holes later that day. Bellarmine Prep, a 4A squad from Tacoma, won the tourney team title.

Postseason looms

The district tournament for both boys and girls is at Gold Mountain Golf Club (Bremerton) on May 17. The state 2A golf tournaments are May 24-25 in Richland, with the boys at Horn Rapids Golf Course and girls at Columbia Point Golf Course.
