She’s still on target.

Port Angeles 17-year-old Jaiden Grinnell, a member of the United States National Shotgun Team, claimed the top women’s score in International Skeet at the Miami Cup Skeet Championship in Miami, Fla., on Feb. 8.

International Skeet is an Olympic sport in which the competitor uses a shotgun to break clay targets that cross a field of eight shooting stations placed in a semi-circle.

Grinnell said she had plenty of solid competition to shoot with and against, all in Olympic Peninsula-like weather.

"I had never shot there before but it was a really nice range," she said. "I think what helped was that the weather was a lot like home."

Grinnell heads to a training camp in Texas the first week of April and competes in Zone Three championships at Fort Benning, Ga., later that month. She represents the United States in World Cup competition in Munich, Germany, May and in San Marino (east of Rome, Italy) in June.

Grinnell, who said her goal is to qualify for the London Summer Olympic Games in 2012, also qualified to represent the USA at the World Shotgun Championships in Maribor, Slovenia, this August.

Grinnell is a junior at Port Angeles High School. She trains at Sunnydell Shooting Grounds in Sequim with her coach Matt Dryke, a 1984 gold medalist and three-time world champion.

Five countries were represented: Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador and the United States.

"I am very pleased to see our United States shooters shooting high scores at the first competition of the year," said United States Shotgun Team coach Mark Weeks. "This team is really special and it looks like it will be a great year for the USA in International Skeet."
