Gymnastics: P.A., Sequim gymnasts punch tickets to districts

The Port Angeles High School gymnastics squad is headed to districts and they’ll have some teammates from the east along for the ride.

Julie Pineau and Ennisa Albin of Sequim earned district meet berths as individuals while their regular season teammates from Port Angeles earned the second of two district seeds from the 2A/3A Olympic-Narrows Sub-District tourney on Feb. 5 at Mount Rainier High School.

Pineau, an exchange student from France, earned district berths in all four events — bars, beam, floor and vault — while Albin earned district berths in beam and vault.

Pineau placed fourth on the vault with 8.4 points, ninth on the floor exercise with 8.55 points and 10th on the beam (7.225 points). She also scored 8.75 points on the bars. Albin advanced with strong scores on the vault (7.3) and beam (6.65).

Capital High School took first with a score of 153.525 team points, with Port Angeles in second with 149.925 points, ending district team berth hopes for North Thurston, North Kitsap and River Ridge.

The district meet is set for Feb. 14 at Mount Rainier High School.

Top finishers for Port Angeles included sophomore Maya Wharton, who was first in beam (9.4), fourth on the floor exercise (9.175) and seventh on vault (8.25) and bars (6.55). Freshman Cassii Middlestead was second on bars (7.9) and freshman Sydney Miner was fifth on vault (8.35) and beam (7.8), and 10th on the floor exercise (8.45). Senior Elizabeth DeFrang was a top-10 finisher in beam, floor and vault.
