A trio of local gymnasts are headed to the state meet after earning qualifying scores at the 2A/3A West Central District 3 meet in Puyallup on Feb. 16.
Sequim High seniors Alex Schmadeke and Susannah Sharp will be joined by Port Angeles freshman Jessamyn Schindler as they vie for top placings at the state meet, scheduled for Feb. 25-26 at Sammamish High School in Bellevue.
Schmadeke posted top-10 scores on the beam (second place, 9.275 points), floor exercise (fourth, 9.275) and vault (sixth, 8.575), as well as a state-qualifying mark on bars (7.8).
Sharp qualified with an 8.5-point effort on the vault.
Schindler qualified on both vault (fifth, 8.7 points) and beam (8.425).
“This was the highest level of competition at a district meet that I have seen in my nine years of coaching,” Port Angeles assistant coach Jackie Mangano said.
Three other Sequim gymnasts competed at district. Senior Danica Pierson scored 26.325 all-around points, with a 7.05 vault mark her best individual event. Senior Ellie Turner tallied 24.70 points, scoring a 7.35 on the vault for her best individual score. Sophomore Amara Brown competed in two events, earning her top individual mark in the floor exercise (5.90).
Bainbridge took top honors at the district meet with 160.75 points and will advance as a team to state, as will second place North Thurston (158.975 points). North Kitsap was sixth.
Sequim, competing as a co-op with Port Angeles during the regular season, placed seventh as a team with 128.15 points.
