The season is over but for two of these swimmers, there’s room and time for improvement.
Rachel Hardy and Gianna Vennetti, both sophomores, each earned top-eight finishes in their respective races at the class 2A state meet Nov. 14-15 in Federal Way.
Hardy pulled off a freestyle double, earning seventh place in the 50 free (26.21) and the 100 free (58.94). Hardy’s final swim in the 100 free was a personal best while her 25.85 swim in the 50 free preliminaries was another personal best.
Vennetti scored a place in the 100 butterfly finals with a 1:06.35 in the preliminaries. She wound up eighth in the final with a 1:08.83 swim.
Sequim’s 200 free relay squad – Hardy and Vennetti with seniors Sarah Keltonic and Louise Showers – took 13th in the preliminary round, missing the top-eight cutoff for the finals.
With Hardy and Vennetti’s finishes, Sequim scored five team points and finished 17th in the 2A team standings. Aberdeen took the 2A classification championship with 83 points while Squalicum (65 points) was second and Anacortes (61 points) was third. West Central District champ Fife was fourth with 58 points.
Just three of Sequim’s nine district meet qualifiers are seniors, giving the Wolves a strong returning squad in 2009.
