Mike McMahan is used to honors, but this one was particularly sweet.

Two months after being inducted into the Pacific Northwest Coaches Hall of Fame in November of 2013, McMahan got word he was picked for the AAA Minor League Football Hall of Fame on Jan. 8.

The honor is considered the highest level of semi-pro football honors in the nation, he said, with several inductees having experience at the National Football League, Canadian Football League and Division I college levels.

“I was shocked — that’s a pretty big national thing,” McMahan said. “It was a huge honor.”

McMahan played quarterback in the Northwest Football League for 15 years for teams like the Eastside Express, which went 16-0 and won the league title, and the Federal Way Jets, where he was part of two more championships. After finished his playing career with the Snohomish County Blue Knights and Snohomish County Vikings, he coached youth football for 16 seasons. He then coached semi-pro football with former Seattle Seahawks great Eddie McMillan as a defensive assistant with the Vikings, then moved to the Olympic Peninsula and was the offensive coordinator of the Olympic Peninsula Eagles of the Cascade Football League.

A coaching veteran of 28 years, with at least 12 of those with semi-pro teams, McMahan is the offensive coordinator of the Snohomish County Thunder of the Western Washington Football Alliance. He is also the varsity quarterback coach and junior varsity offensive coordinator for Port Angeles High School’s Roughriders.

With an 8-year-old son playing football in the Future Riders youth football program, McMahan said he has no plans on retirement just yet, despite the third Hall of Fame induction.

“I plan on helping out him,” McMahan said.

McMahan hosts “Coach Mac” on KSQM, from 5-8 p.m. each Sunday evening and 6-9 p.m. each Monday night.
