Men’s basketball: Pirates edge Everett to extend win streak

Peninsula's road sweep pushes run to six, has PC atop North Division

Edmonds may have the ranking but Peninsula has the division lead.

A pair of narrow road wins has Peninsula’s Pirates on top of the NWAC North Division and closing in on a postseason berth with just four games left in the regular season.

PC has a two-game lead in the division over No. 4-ranked Edmonds.

On Feb. 14, the Pirates (8-2 in conference, 15-9 overall) wore down the host Everett Trojans for a 69-65 win.

Ryley Callaghan and Darrion Daniels paced a balanced offense with 15 points each as five Pirates scored in double figures.Malik Mayeux and Dimitri Amos both had double-doubles; Mayeux had 14 points and 12 rebounds, Amos added 14 points and 10 boards.

Callaghan had five of PC’s 15 assists and Daniels had four.

Derek Brown Jr., the conference’s leading scorer at 24.7 points per contest, led Everett with 27 points and 11 rebounds. The Trojans, however, failed to secure their own glass as PC had 19 offensive rebounds leading to 19 second-chance points.

On Feb. 10, Peninsula got another key road win when they shrugged off a 14-point halftime deficit to knock off Whatcom, 75-71.

Callaghan drilled six 3-pointers in nine tries and led a second half surge with 24 points and four assists. Daniels had 13 points off the bench and Jermiah Hobbs chipped in 11 points.

Conner Kelley led Whatcom with 14 points.

Peninsula, despite trailing 37-23 at halftime, pressured the Orcas into the defeat: PC forced 16 Whatcom turnovers that turned into 18 points and had just five turnovers — zero on steals — on the offensive side.

Peninsula hosts Olympic on Feb. 17 and Bellevue on Feb. 20 before finishing the regular season on the road, playing at Skagit Valley (Mount Vernon) on Feb. 24 and at Shoreline on Feb. 27.

The NWAC tournament is set for March 10-13 at Everett Community College.
