Peninsula College’s men’s team has had its share of scoring wizards in the past several years.

But Alex Martinez did something Saturday no player had ever done in school history.

The sophomore from Reno, Nev., set a single match scoring record with five goals in a 9-0 romp against the visiting Pierce Raiders.

Martinez put the host Pirates on the board 15 minutes in, off an assist by Ash Apollon, and Martinez struck again 17 minutes later with the help of Corbyn May.

After Kalei Gallarde made it 3-0 with a goal at the 37-minute mark, Martinez tallied the next three scores with assists from Apollon, Kassio Monteiro and Victor Sanchez.

Miguel Gonzalez, Jared Robinson and Seth Ransom held the school’s previous goal record with four apiece.

Apollon’s three assists tied the college’s record for assists in a match.

“The guys played well and didn’t let up,” Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman said.

On Sept. 17, the Pirates defended their home turf against a big school, knocking off North Idaho College 5-1.

Alex Martinez opened the scoring at the 10-minute mark with a penalty kick score.

Erick Urzua made it 2-0 about 10 minutes later, thanks to an Ash Apollon assist, and Keevan Webb made it 3-0 before North Idaho spoiled the shutout in the 38th minute.

Kalei Gallarde and Caio Maciel added scores for the Pirates.

“This was a really nice win for us today,” Chapman said. “To be able to play a National Junior College and have this result really says a lot. The guys are continuing to play well and are really knocking the ball around. (We’re) still giving up goals which we need to work on.”

Goalkeepers Aaron Zavolokin and Edwin Guandique manned the net for the Pirates, combining for six saves.

Looking ahead

The Pirates are at Tacoma Sept. 25, and travel to Salem, Ore., to take on Chemeketa on Sept. 28. P.C. then hosts three consecutive home matches: Highline on Oct. 2, Clark on Oct. 5 and Olympic on Oct. 9.

P.C. men’s soccer is ranked No. 10 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s latest poll, released Sept. 15.

“Even though we have been doing really well and scoring goals, we are now moving into the heart of our season against opponents that are going to be much tougher,” Chapman said.

“The next four games will be a true test to us and if we play well and come out on top, we could be in a great position in regards to our divisional standings,” he said.
