Let the second season begin.
Already with a North Division title, a No. 1 NWAC playoff seed and first round postseason bye in hand, Peninsula College’s men capped their regular season with a pair of wins last week.
The Pirates (14-0-1 in conference, 16-0-2 overall), now ranked No. 8 in the national junior college poll and No. 1 in the conference, started the week with a 1-0 road win against Whatcom.
The only goal of the match came in the 34th minute, when Kevin Medina slipped a pass to Miguel Valderrama who knocked in the game-winner.
The No. 4-ranked Orcas, who scored in extra time at Sigmar Field back on Oct. 8 to earn a 1-1 tie — Peninsula’s lone non-victory in the regular season — could not manage a goal this time around against a strong Pirate defense keeper Brannon Dwyer.
Peninsula capped the week with a 4-0 home win on “Sophomore Day” — the final match for second-year players — against Edmonds, the last team to beat a PC men’s squad (Oct. 31, 2015).
Peninsula didn’t break through until the 41st minute when Juan Carrillo went airborne for a acrobatic strike that found the net; Medina earned the assist.
The Pirates then scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half to put the match out of reach. Valderrama played a nice through ball to Joey Hollimon, who slotted it past a diving Edmonds keeper Issac Ensz. The second came from Michael Day at close range, assisted by Alex Ramos.
Peninsula added a final tally in the 65th minute when Salvador Vargas scored, assisted by Hollimon.
Uribe, a transfer sophomore, went the distance in goal for the shutout.
The Pirate men, ranked No. 8 in the latest national poll, also honored its seven sophomores: Uribe, Vargas, Henry Bernabe, Jared Ortiz, Jose Soto, Demar Stewart and Clarence Wong.
The Pirates host an NWAC quarterfinal game on Nov. 5, following the PC women’s match that kicks off at noon.
Peninsula’s men take on the winner of the Nov. 2 Tacoma/Walla Walla match. The Pirates have not played either team this season.
The NWAC Final Four is set for Nov. 11 and Nov. 13 at the Starfire Sports Complex in Seattle.
