If Sequim’s girls basketball squad hopes to snap their two season-long losing streak, it’ll have to come in 2010.
The Wolves were overmatched in the Mark Morris Invitational falling to the host Monarchs on Dec. 29 and to Hudson Bay on Dec. 30 in the consolation game.
Taybra Teeters led Mark Morris with 13 points and eight rebounds as the Monarchs topped Sequim 77-33 on Tuesday evening.
Christie Kirkpatrick added 11 points and Nicole Duscha grabbed 18 re-bounds for Mark Morris.
The Monarchs led 23-9 after one quarter, 50-18 by halftime and 63-24 after three quarters.
"We came out flat from the get-go," Sequim coach Stephanie Lewis said.
Haleigh Harrison led the Wolves with 11 points; Lea Hopson chipped in with eight points.
"Sequim is a young team with a lot of freshmen and sophomores who are doing a lot of good things," Monarch coach Scott Ruhland told The Daily News (Vancouver).
The Vancouver, Wa.-based 3A Eagles from Hudson’s Bay made quick work of the Wolves in the consolation bracket of the Mark Morris Invitational on Dec. 30, taking a 20-10 lead after one quarter and 36-15 lead by halftime.
The Eagles, led by Ramona Vercher (14 points) and Lexi Gleason (12), improved to 4-4 with the win.
Hopson led Sequim with 13 points while Rylleigh Zbaraschuk added nine points, the only Wolves to score more than three points.
Sequim did outscore Hudson’s Bay 13-11 in the third quarter and dropped the second half by just three points (24-21).
"It was the first time I saw some raw emotion on the court," Lewis said. "They got angry if they got scored on. We were a lot better on help defense. They stepped up in the second half."
Lewis said the tournament should help the young Wolves as they prepare to get back into Olympic League play this week and that the experience helped with team bonding.
"It was good to get off the peninsula, to show the girls there are other teams we (can) aspire to," Lewis said.
The Wolves are likely to get a boost this week with the return of post Jessica Lauritzen, who was nursing an injury for the first third of the season.
Sequim was slated to play Kingston on Jan. 5 – results were unavailable at press time. The Wolves are at North Kitsap on Jan. 7, then play at Bremerton on Jan. 12.
