Despite a disparity in the number of athletes, Sequim’s swimming and diving squad saw some improvement in a 124-49 loss to North Kitsap on Jan. 7.
“It was a great meet for these boys so soon after the holiday break,” Sequim head coach Linda Moats said.
Senior Eric Prosser earned two of Sequim’s three first-place event finishes, matching his best time from the end of last season in the 50 free (24.62) and beating the field in the 100 backstroke (1:03.25).
Charlie Prosser, Eric’s brother, swam good times for his first attempts at the 200 free (2:46.52) and the 100 fly (1:36.13), Moats said.
“He will improve those times the more he swims the events,” she said.
Earning first place in his first varsity meet was freshman Matthew Craig who scored 146.25 points. Sequim’s coach said she has hopes Craig will qualify for districts this season.
Moats also said Andrew Hansted shows promise of being a contender for districts after dropping seven seconds off his 50 free time from last week to 30.08.
In his first meet of the season, Chase Ridgeway broke the 30-second mark in the 50 free. Sequim’s 400 free relay team — Eric and Charlie Prosser, Christian Goodrich and Wendall Lorenzen — bettered their previous top mark by more than three seconds (4:42.57).
“We had fun and many of the swimmers and divers performed well,” Moats said.
North Kitsap had 30 competitors in the pool last week; Sequim had eight.
The Wolves (0-4) host Klahowya on Jan. 15. Sequim is at Bremerton on Jan. 29 to close the regular season, before a divisional meet in Port Angeles on Feb. 3 and the West Central District meet, set for Feb. 13-14 at Hazen High School in Renton.
