Kimberly Wing and her partner Mike Johnson once again were thrilled to be wearing shiny new gold medals they earned at the Summer Sports Classic Golf Tournament, a state-level tournament for Special Olympics Washington, in mid-August.

The two were invited after winning at the regional level in Tacoma in July. Wing has participated as an athlete with Special Olympics for nearly 30 years. She started golfing at the age of 17 while living in Arizona with a young Phil Mickelson as her coach.

She earned a gold medal at the World Games in 1995 in individual play. Over the past five years she has played alternate-shot with Mike Johnson, a unified partner. Unified sports brings athletes with cognitive disabilities together with non-disabled partners.

The two have come out on top three out of the four years they have played together. The Clallam County Orcas provide opportunities for athletes to participate in golf, softball, basketball, track and field, swimming and bowling.

If you have an interest in either participating as an athlete, a unified partner or as a volunteer, call Wendy Bonham at 477-4134.
