Fatigued, worn down and a little broken.

The end of a long, frustrating season closed last week for the Peninsula Pirates, who dropped a 59-51 decision to Shoreline on Feb. 24, ending a 2009-2010 campaign with a 2-14 conference mark and 3-21 overall finish.

Ana Haberman led the visiting Dolphins with 29 points and Lynsey Sandum added 20 points, dropping Peninsula to 0-8 at home.

Brianna DeSantis led the Pirates with 17 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Teammate Danika Goodwin added 11 points.

In her final game at Peninsula, sophomore Dena Houser had five points, five rebounds and five assists.

"She is such a leader by example," Peninsula coach Ali Crumb said. "She works so hard, (both) in the weight room and the classroom."

"We’re tired," Crumb added. "We had a long, stressful season. As much as we love to … play, we need some closure. (Dena) made the best of it."

The Pirates were beset by numerous injuries by the end of the campaign and struggled through a 12-game, midseason losing streak followed by two wins, then seven losses to end the year.

The Pirates got a glimpse of hope with the emergence of two transfers, DeSantis and Goodwin, who wound up leading the team in scoring average. Goodwin led the team in steals per game while DeSantis was second in rebounding.

That silver lining extending into the 2010-2011 season includes having 10 of the Pirates’ 11 players – all but Houser – eligible to play next fall.

But talk of next season can wait, Crumb said.

"We’ll take a week and a half, then talk about what our plans are," Crumb said.

"I want to know what the situation is going into recruiting."
