The slide continues for the Peninsula women’s basketball team.

The Pirates (1-6 in division, 4-12 overall) were thumped by the Everett Trojans, 83-50, on Jan. 22.

The Trojans (4-2 in division, 8-7 overall) jumped out to a 25-point halftime lead and never let the Pirates get rolling. Peninsula shot 28 percent from the field after the break, including three-of-13 from beyond the three-point line.

“We started out the game slow and not ready to play,” said Peninsula coach Alison Crumb. “They beat us 48-23 in the first half and I would say 90 percent of those were layups.”

As if six consecutive division losses were not enough to address, the Pirates had an old habit creep back into their game on Saturday night. They committed 26 turnovers, which Everett used to net 27 points.

Peninsula averaged 27 turnovers over its first nine games but had since curbed that tendency, averaging only 18.7 turnovers per game in the six preceding Everett.

Jasmine Jackson scored 16 points to lead Peninsula. Port Angeles High School alum Danika Goodwin poured in 13 buckets and grabbed six rebounds.

The Trojans had four players in double-figures, including Stephanie Schumacher, who shot for 16 points and collected five rebounds.

Mary Ochiltree powered Everett with 14 points, seven rebounds and five steals.

The Pirates will look to get on track when they host the Shoreline Dolphins (1-5 in division, 5-9 overall) at 5 p.m. today, Jan. 26.

“At some point, we need to find a way to play as a team and come out with some intensity,” said Crumb.

P.C. fades against Edmonds

The glimpses of optimism are there, but the wins are still elusive.

The Peninsula women’s basketball team was trounced by the Edmonds Tritons, 73-47, on Jan. 19.

The Pirates let Edmonds slip away in the closing minutes of the first half and never recovered.

Callie Monfrey netted a two-point bucket with 12:03 to play in the second half, helping Peninsula stay within striking distance, 45-34.
