The Peninsula College Pirates are hoping for fairer weather after dropping a pair of games to Shoreline on March 31 and two games at an interregional tourney April 4.

Starting pitcher Carly Swingle left the opener at Shoreline with stiffness in her arm but it may not have mattered the way Dolphin sophomore Athea Surface was pitching. Surface held Peninsula to just two hits in an 8-0, five-inning shutout. Molly Fletcher and Ashley Lowe-Thaens produced P.C.’s only hits as Shoreline plated six runs in the decisive fourth inning.

In the nightcap, the Pirates managed to scratch three runs off Surface and extend the game into seven innings but fell 11-3. Catcher Marquita Espinoza rocked a home run to left-center in the third inning. Fletcher was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. Lowe-Thaens had a squeeze bunt to score Fletcher. Brittany Norton took the loss for Peninsula with Lowe-Thaens cleaning up on the mound.

The Pirates lost their two games at their inter-regional tournament at Skagit Valley on Saturday. In game one, Clackamas edged P.C. 3-2 behind the strong pitching of Megan Peterson. Swingle nearly outdid the Clackamas ace, holding the Cougars to six hits and three runs.

In game two, the Clark Penguins smacked 13 hits in a 12-4 win. The Pirates managed seven hits and played error-free ball.

Peninsula was scheduled to host Bremerton’s Olympic Rangers on April 7 – results were unavailable at press time. The Pirates take on Bellevue at home April 11.
