With 14 teams from the Olympic Peninsula, Kitsap County, Yakima and as far as Blackburn, Australia, the fourth-annual Crush in the Slush Basketball Tourney in Port Townsend Jan. 2-3 is sure to be one busy weekend of hoops.

The tourney features both boys and girls squads from Sequim, Port Townsend and Chimacum, plus a number of 3A and 4A teams from across the state.

Action gets under way with a

9 a.m. contest Friday morning featuring the girls’ Chimacum Cowboys squad versus the Blackburn Vikings, and finishes about 37 hours later with the conclusion of the Port Townsend/South Kamloops boys’ contest Saturday night.

Sequim’s girls open at 2:15 p.m. on Jan. 2 against the Cedar Park Christian Eagles of Bothel, followed immediately by the Sequim boys taking on the South Kamloops Titans.

On Saturday, Sequim’s girls once again play at 2:15 p.m., this time taking on Chimacum. The boys follow that game with a 4 p.m. date with Chimacum’s boys.

All games are at the Port Townsend High School gymnasium, 1500 Van Ness St.

Other teams on the docket include girls teams from Central Kitsap, Eisenhower (Yakima) and Lakewood (Tacoma), plus the boys from Lakeside (Seattle).

Tickets are $6 per day and $10 for the two-day tourney, or $3 and $5 for seniors and students.

Proceeds from the tournament go to support youth basketball in Jefferson County, said Sheila Murphy, Port Townsend Basketball Club president.
