A trio of traditional Olympic League powerhouses — Sequim, Port Angeles and North Kitsap — remain undefeated in league play heading into this week, but by Thursday evening that will change.
The Wolves (2-0 in league, 5-4 overall) host the undefeated North Kitsap Vikings Thursday.
Sequim picked up a pair of three-game victories last week, sweeping Kingston on the road on Oct. 1 and Klahowya at home on Oct. 3.
Sequim was slated to play North Mason in Belfair on Oct. 8 — results were not available at press time. The Wolves host North Kitsap on Oct. 10 before playing at the Capital City tournament in Olympia on Oct. 12.
Girls swim splashed
Olympic’s Trojans spoiled Sequim’s first home meet of the 2013 campaign, winning a 120-58 decision on Oct. 3.
Sequim managed three first-place finishes, two from junior Danielle Barrow. Barrow topped the field in the 200 free and 100 backstroke. Sequim’s Emily Van Dyken took top honors in diving. Cassandra Calderon (200 free) and Carmen Wilwert (100 breast) had second-place swims.
The Wolves are at North Kitsap on Oct 10 before closing out the regular season with two home meets: Oct. 17 versus the Bremerton Knights and Oct. 24 against Klahowya’s Eagles.
Cross country up to challenge
A last-minute venue change couldn’t keep Sequim’s Wolves boys from dominating an Olympic League meet on Oct. 2.
Sequim’s depth was on display as the Wolves swept places 3-8 — Brendon Despain, Peter Ohnstad, Mikey Cobb, Chris Jeffko, Jackson Oliver and Christian Ash — to topple Port Angeles and host Port Townsend.
Originally scheduled for a Port Angeles venue, construction moved the meet to Port Townsend’s wet, muddy and hilly Discovery Bay Golf Course. That didn’t seem to bother Sequim’s Wolfpack. Sequim’s boys tallied 25 team points, well ahead of PA’s Roughriders (47) and the Redskins (71). On the girls’ side, Port Angeles led the way after sweeping the first five places. Sequim edged Port Townsend for second place.
Freshman Erin Vig was Sequim’s top runner, placing sixth with a 24:18 finish. Alexis Cromer was 13th, Elizabeth Rosales placed 14th and Siana Turner was 15th.
At Saturday’s Curtis Invite at University Place, Cobb was the top Wolf with an 18th-place finish out of 237 runners, helping Sequim place seventh in team scoring. Cobb finished the 5,000-meter course in 16:36. Despain was just 17 seconds behind, placing 35th, and Ohnstad was 51st overall. Sequim’s top girls finisher was Vig in 119th place with a time of 23:14.
Sequim travels to Belfair for an Olympic League meet against Bremerton and host North Mason on Oct. 9. The Wolves then take on Olympic and North Kitsap in Poulsbo on Oct. 16.
Soccer stopped
Sequim’s squad looks to rebound this week after a pair of Olympic League losses to two top league teams.
On Oct. 1, Kingston defended its home (artificial) turf with a 3-0 win against the visiting Wolves. Katie Keller had a goal and two assists for the Buccaneers.
Missing several key pieces with injuries — forward McKenzie Bentz (strained ligaments in foot) and defender Mattie Clark (concussion) — Sequim kept it close, forcing a scoreless tie after one half.
Sequim’s junior varsity squad topped the Buccaneers 2-1, getting goals from Nicole Anders and Abby Hanstad.
On Oct. 3, Klahowya topped the depleted Wolves in Sequim 5-0, getting a hat trick (three goals) from McKenzie Cook.
In JV action, Sequim topped Klahowya 5-1, with two scores from Hanstad.
The Wolves host league powerhouse North Kitsap on Oct. 10 and are at Klahowya on Oct. 12.
