The road treated Sequim High’s fastpitch team quite nicely Monday afternoon. SHS’s baseball squad? Not so much.

The Wolves’ fastpitch team routed host North Mason 20-0 in a five-inning, mercery rule-shortened affair to improve to 7-0 in Olympic League play. Makayla Bentz tossed all five innings, giving up just one hit and three walks and striking out five Bulldogs.

At the plate, Bentz fell short of the cycle by a home run, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Mary Lu Clift drove in four runs and scored four times, and Shelby Lott was 3-for-3 with a triple. Sequim had 11 hits, drew nine walks and took advantage of nine North Mason errors.

On the baseball diamond, Sequim’s Nick Johnston was nearly unhitable, striking out 13 North Mason batters and giving up just two hits.

But Sequim managed just one hit — a third inning leadoff triple by Evan Hurn — and couldn’t score against North Mason starter Daniel Burggraaf. The Bulldog ace struck out seven Wolves and allowed just the one hit and one walk. Sequim (5-2 in Olympic League, 8-2 overall) had a runner on third with less than two outs twice but couldn’t bring a run home, the first time they’ve been shut out this season.

The loss drops Sequim back into a tie with Olympic for the league lead.
