Only one of the top teams in the state could keep Sequim High’s senior-laden volleyball squad from topping the Olympic League this season. Three of those seniors are getting some postseason recognition from their 14-5 season.
Emma LeBlanc is the second Sequim player to earn All-League Defensive MVP in as many seasons after leading the Wolves with 402 digs — 21.2 per game — and 298 during the regular season. She also led Sequim in serving at 95.8 percent for the season and missed just five serves in the regular season. Hannah Hudson won the award for Sequim in 2013.
Also earning all-Olympic League first team honors were seniors Alyse Armstrong and Emily Wallner. Armstrong, who also was named to the league’s first team in 2013, led Sequim with 147 kills and 26 blocks, and was second on the team with 198 assists and 35 aces. Wallner, an all-league honorable mention last fall, led Sequim with 241 assists (12.7 per game) and 55 aces, and was second on the team with 105 kills and 16 blocks.
Junior Rylie Roberts earned her first all-Olympic League honor after being named to the second team. Roberts was second on the team with 190 digs and third with 78 kills and 34 aces.
North Kitsap’s Sarah Holt was the repeat winner of the Olympic League MVP award despite missing four weeks with an ankle injury. Holt and the league champion Vikings placed second at the state 2A tournament, falling to Tumwater in the finals. Clay Blackwood of Bremerton won the Coach of the Year award while the Olympic Trojans took home the Sportsmanship award.
Girls soccer
Sequim’s Wolves finished 2-10 in the Olympic League and 5-11 for the campaign but still saw two players earn kudos from league coaches.
Midfielder Shelby Lott earned a spot on the all-league first team, pacing the Wolves with six goals and four assists on the season.
Teammate Maeve Harris, also a midfielder, was named to the league’s second team. She had four goals and six assists.
North Kitsap midfielder Gemma Ferland took home the league’s MVP award. North Mason’s Mitchell James and Port Angeles’ Scott Moseley shared the Coach of the Year award while North Mason took home the league’s Sportsmanship honor.
Cross country
By virtue of their top-10 finishes at the Olympic League championships on Oct. 23, a quintet of Sequim boys and two Sequim girls were named to the all-league cross country list.
Seniors Mikey Cobb and Peter Ohnstad and juniors C.J. Daniels, Brendon Despain and Jackson Oliver each raced to top-10 finishes at league — teammate Chris Jeffko was 11th, missing all-league status by one place — en route to the Wolves’ second-place finish at the 2A state meet, the best finish in the program’s history. It’s Cobb’s third all-league honor in four years.
For their efforts, Sequim head coach Harold Huff was named the Olympic League’s boys teams Coach of the Year.
Juniors Waverly Shreffler and Emily Webb earned all-league honors; Shreffler finished second and Webb fifth at the league meet. Teammate Audrey Shingleton was 11th, just missing all-league status. Shreffler went on the qualify for the 2A state meet.
Cheryl Gerardi of Port Angeles was named the league’s girls teams Coach of the Year, and her Roughriders took home the Sportsmanship award.
Football
Seven Wolves earned spots on the all-Olympic League team, four of them on the league’s first team.
Senior Miguel Moroles was named to the first team at quarterback. He finished 91-of-132 for 1,083 passing yards, nine touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also ran for 772 yards (7.6 yards per carry) and 11 scores. Moroles was named an all-league honorable mention in 2013.
Sophomore Bailey Early was named to the first team at wide receiver. Earley led the team with 37 receptions (Ian Dennis was second with 21) and had five the team’s nine touchdown catches.
Earning first team status on defense were Sequim sophomore defensive back Dylan Lott and junior linebacker Chris Whitaker.
Defensive end Jack Shea, a junior, was named to the second team while senior Josiah Anastasi, a defensive back, earned his second all-league honorable mention in as many seasons.
Freshman Gavin Verlade was named to the league’s second team for his special teams play.
The Wolves went 2-4 in the regular season and 4-5 overall, qualifying for a postseason tiebreaker before being ousted by rival Port Angeles.
North Kitsap’s TJ Jensen and North Mason’s Daniel Burggraaf share the league’s MVP. Bremerton’s Calvin Cardwell was named the offensive MVP and North Kitsap’s Bob Evans earned defensive MVP. The Coaching Staff of the Year went to Kingston and the Sportsmanship award went to Port Angeles’ Roughriders.
