Prep sports: Mid-season grades for SHS’s Wolves

Sequim High coaches give their grades and thoughts on their team's performances midway through their 2014-2015 campaigns

Boys basketball

Head coach: Greg Glasser

Team record (as of Jan. 4): 5-4

Grade: C+

Coach’s take: “I feel our guys are performing above expectations and coming together as a team. In addition I feel that our team as a whole is starting to buy into what Sequim Basketball is all about and that is the TEAM. I think that our defense is starting to come together, but we still have a long way to go (C+). I do believe that this year’s team is fun to watch because they do share the ball and the run the court. It is a fun group of guys and I am honored to be their coach.”

Girls basketball

Head coach: Evan Still

Team record (as of Jan. 4): 4-5

Grade: B

Coach’s take: “I think that we have had a few tough games where we had an opportunity to rise to the challenge and we let it slip away. I am encouraged though and I think our last few practices have been our best. Our girls are not just going out there and playing the game and going through the motions but they are starting to understand the game at a higher level and that will pay off for them in the long run. We are tough on defense (definitely our strongest area) and we have good size inside and quick guards around the perimeter. Offensively is where we have been struggling. We have been getting good looks and when we execute our sets we almost always get the shot that we are looking for. We are just lacking that consistency, both in executing the plays every time and converting our shots into points, that great teams have.”

Girls bowling

Head coach: Randy Perry

Team record (as of Jan. 4): 3-5

Grade: C+

Coach’s take: “We have more wins this year and are getting better. Have had a couple of nice games and came close to beating Bremerton.”

Boys/Girls Wrestling

Head coach: Charles Drabek

Grades: A/B (Attitude) and B/C for effort

Coach’s take: “(On attitude) The kids have really good attitudes and are all willing to learn. (On effort) I always expect more. A lot of it is mental toughness and awareness because there’s a lot of stuff we’ve gone over and we’re still making the same newbie mistakes. But I feel really upbeat about this team. I don’t expect to be league champions but I expect them to improve.”

Boys Swimming

Head coach: Linda Moats

Grades: A (attitude) and B (performance)

Coach’s take: “(On attitude) They all are willing to work hard, they all show up on time and go through the whole practice without complaining. It’s the best team I’ve had with their willingness to work hard and they are all setting goals for themselves. (On performance) We have nine eligible swimmers and it’s been tough to get everyone eligible due to either illness or needing enough practices. But it’s still early in season and I’m not seeing their best yet. There are a lot of new swimmers to the team who are growing exponentially and I expect to see a better performance in the near future.
