For Sequim coach Lisa Corbit, the difference between the two teams was clear well before the opening tip: court time.
"They play year-round, hours a day. When you play a team like that, it shows," Corbit said, minutes after watching Port Angeles top Sequim 74-22 last Tuesday evening. "We were obviously way overmatched."
Sophomore guard Jessica Madison scored 22 points and Kiah Jones added 12 points as the Roughriders roughed up Sequim for three quarters, leading 43-9 by halftime and 65-13 after three periods.
Sequim’s Lauryn Garrett was a bright spot for the Wolves, breaking free for 15 of the team’s 22 points. Her basket two minutes into the third quarter put Sequim into double digits.
Sequim’s Sunma Agostine had four points and Nicole Phifer scored three points on a last-second three-point shot.
"We were playing a team that is on the court a thousand more hours then we are," Corbit said.
Corbit said she and the Wolves are taking away at least one moral victory from the game: Sequim held P.A. to 12 points less than in their previous meeting.
"(Our players) come out and play with heart," Corbit said. "They play until the last minute. You can’t ask for more than that as a coach."
The Wolves were scheduled to play North Kitsap in Poulsbo Feb. 10 – results were unavailable at press time.
Sequim plays at North Mason (Belfair) on Feb. 13 and hosts Olympic (Silverdale) on Feb. 17.
