Sequim’s Wolves aren’t used to being mired in any kind of losing streak.

But that’s what the purple and gold were facing after a tough pair of losses last week that left Sequim at 3-4 in league play, two-and-a-half games back of Kingston for the top 2A playoff seed.

The most dispiriting moments must have come on April 23 after rival Port Angeles, seeking its first win against the Wolves since 2003, got exactly that. Svetlio Hurd scored with 16 minutes remaining and the Wolves were unable to crack the Roughrider defense for a single score in a 1-0 defeat.

Since that last Roughrider win in 2003, Sequim had amassed a 9-0-1 mark against the ‘Riders, outscoring their rivals 28-4 in that span.

Brasher said a number of factors led to the loss, from Port Angeles’ lob-over-the-top style to simply not coming with a better game plan than the Roughriders.

"We’re still probably a little overconfident," Brasher said. "(I’m) still trying to get the fact across that we’ve got to play good for 80 minutes."

Brasher said he hopes to get his players to focus on the final third of the field where the squad can translate good, ball-controlled offensive sets into goals.

Sequim looked to snap their three-game losing streak – their first since the 2006 season – as they played at Olympic (Silverdale) on April 27. Results of the game were unavailable at press time.

The Wolves host Port Townsend on April 30.

"It’s a key week for us; we have to step it up," Brasher said.

Sequim has two road games after that – May 5 at Klahowya and May 6 at Kingston – before hosting North Mason on May 10.

Knights dominate in league win

Bremerton’s Knights started Sequim’s week on a dour note three days prior to the Port Angeles loss, handing the Wolves a 4-1 defeat in Bremerton.

Knight Nicholas Sebastian intercepted a pass in the Sequim defense and found teammate Nick Riders for a score barely a minute into the game.

Sequim rebounded quickly, evening the game two minutes later when Austin Sanford cut through the Bremerton defense and found Waylon Lam on his right for the score, Lam’s first of the season, and a 1-1 tie.

Bremerton’s Tyler Dooghan got the lead back for the Knights seven minutes after that, and Riders chipped in another score for a 3-1 Bremerton lead at halftime.

Riders made it a hat trick just four minutes into the second half for the game’s final score, as the Knights hunkered down into a defense that Sequim couldn’t break through.
