Something had to give.

Sequim’s depth in their doubles teams proved to be too much against Port Angeles on May 12 as the Wolves survived the match-up of 11-0 teams.

The win gives the Wolves the 2009 Olympic League championship and their fourth undefeated regular season in five years.

Already the No. 1 seed heading into districts,

Sequim’s No. 1 doubles team of Kyla Hall and Blaire Maloney improved to 8-0 on the season with a straight-set win against Cassidy Fairchild and Sam Manwell (6-2, 6-0) while Diana Earl and Angela Richards, Sequim’s No. 2 doubles squad, improved to 11-1 as a duo this spring with a straight-set win against Danika Goodwin and Megan Hixson (6-1, 6-0).

Sequim’s Caihley Baker and Mary Cherrett are 10-2 this spring after winning in two sets against Port Angeles’ No. 3 squad while Katrina Chan and Jennifer Lancheros improved to 6-2 with a three-set win against the Roughriders’ No. 4 team.

Despite her loss in singles play, Sequim’s Stacy Hanson is 9-3 this spring and has qualified for the district tourney.

Kari Hankins earned Sequim’s only singles win against P.A., improving to 7-4 with a straight-set win against Aishia Dueno (6-1, 6-1).

Sequim lost twice to Port Angeles last season, falling 4-3 both times.

The West Central District tournament is May 22-23 at Auburn High School in Auburn. Sequim’s Hanson and top four girls’ doubles teams, plus three boys singles players and three doubles teams, are slated to play.

The top four boys’ singles players and doubles teams advance to state; only the top three girls’ singles and doubles teams advance to state.

The class 2A state tournament is May 29-30 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.
