With Sequim High’s girls track team, it’s about quality, not quantity.

Boasting fewer than 20 athletes, Sequim’s girls sprinted, hurdled, threw, jumped and vaulted to another 2A division championship Saturday, taking third overall at the Olympic League meet in Belfair.

Led by senior Lauryn Garrett, juniors Samantha Whiteside and Anna LaBeaume, and sophomore Audrey Lichten, the Wolves racked up 121 team points to edge Kingston and retain the 2A division crown.

Sequim’s first-place finishes, winning the 100 hurdles in 16 seconds flat and winning the long jump by half a foot.

Whiteside won the pole vault (9-6) and took third in the 100-meter sprint, while LaBeaume crushed the competition in the shot put; her winning mark of 38 feet, 9.5 inches was more than seven feet better than the runner-up.

Lichten earned top-three finishes in three events, finishing second in the 800 and third in both 1600- and 3200-meter races.

Sequim’s boys finished fifth at the league meet, two places behind champ North Mason.

Freshman Emanuel Herrera earned the Wolves’ lone first-place finish with a personal-best 41.59 in the 300 hurdles. Derrell Jensen soared just past 40 feet in the triple jump to place second while David Copeland’s 12-foot, 6-inch pole vault earned him second place overall.

North Kitsap won the league girls’ league meet title while Olympic won the boys’ crown.

The Wolves get a bit of a break with their next action, the West Central District meet, set for May 20 and May 23, also at North Mason High School in Belfair. The top-three finishers in each event advance to the class 2A state meet, set for May 28-30 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
