Sequim knocks off defending champs

This one was a long time coming.

This one was a long time coming.

Winless in their past six meetings, Sequim’s Wolves finally found a way to defeat their rivals from Belfair. The Wolves battled to a straight-set win against rival North Mason on Sept. 10, topping the defending Olympic League champions 27-25, 25-23 and 25-22.

"The girls were like, ‘About time!’ We were just a little more steady,’ Sequim coach Jennie Webber Heilman said.

"They (North Mason) graduated eight or nine seniors; they basically have a brand new team," Webber Heilman said.

Sequim earned a triple win Thursday night, winning the varsity, junior varsity and C-team matches, each in straight sets.

Sequim hadn’t beaten North Mason since September 2004.

Sequim added a five-set nonleague win at Interlake, outlasting the Saints 13-25, 25-16, 11-25, 25-23 and 15-12.

Sequim hosts Klahowya on Sept. 17 and Kingston on Sept. 22.
