A late-season losing streak had the Wolves fighting for their playoff lives Saturday.

Thanks to one big inning, Sequim High’s baseball squad is moving on to the West Central District tourney.

The Wolves (11-11) erased a 2-0 deficit by erupting for seven runs in the fourth inning and rode that to an 8-5 win against Fife in a loser-out, subdistrict game at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds on May 5.

Karsten Wake was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and three stolen bases to pace the Sequim offense. Tyler Campbell hit a two-run home run and Nick Ramirez was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

“We played pretty well that day,” Sequim coach Dave Ditlefsen said. “After struggling toward the end of the year … we were due to get the bats going.”

Nick Johnston picked up the win, striking out five but giving up five hits and seven walks in four innings. Jake Hudson earned the save, working three innings and giving up just one run.

Later that day, Sequim dropped a 7-6 decision to Interlake in the fifth/sixth seed game. Down 3-2 in the seventh, Sequim scored four runs only to give up the tying runs on the bottom of the inning.

“We didn’t give that one away; they had a nice rally,” Ditlefsen said. “It was a fantastic game.”

Wake worked four scoreless innings. Interlake got to relievers Hudson and Kyler Johnston for the win.

Wake finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, Campbell drove in two and Ramirez doubled and scored twice to lead the offense.

Sequim was slated to open the district tourney on May 8 at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma against No. 11-seeded Sumner. The winner of that game takes on Olympic League champ North Kitsap on May 9. The loser plays Saturday, May 12, against the winner of the Port Angeles vs. Foster/Interlake game, also slated for May 9.

Five of the 12 teams in the district tourney advance to regionals.

“When we’re playing well (and) hitting with confidence, we can beat anybody,” Ditlefsen said.
