If Saturday’s Port Angeles Invitational is any indication, two things are true about the upcoming track and field season.

One, North Kitsap looks like odds-on favorites to take the Olympic League title.

Two, it’ll be an absolute dogfight for runner-up.

Sequim’s boys and girls finished in fourth place, both within 15 points of second place in a three-way pack behind the NK Vikings from Poulsbo.

A trio of Sequim athletes took home first-place finishes Saturday. Reigning 2A shot put champion Anna LaBeaume won her premier event with a toss of 37 feet, 6 inches. The senior also topped the field in the discus with a toss of 97-7.

Samantha Whiteside, a three-time state qualifier in the pole vault, cleared 10 feet, 9 inches for an easy win. She added a 15-foot, 4-inch long jump to win that event and placed second in the 200-meter race.

Audrey Lichten was second in the 800-meter race and third at 3,000 meters, while Haleigh Harrison tied for second in the high jump.

Sequim’s girls finished with 92 team points, three behind rival Port Angeles.

On the boys side, sophomore Frank Catelli took top honors in both the discus (133 feet, 4 inches) and javelin (169 feet, 5 inches).

Emanuel Herrera won the 300-meter hurdles (42.85 seconds) and Jared Lindorfer blew by the competition in the 400-meter race (55.2 seconds).

Track rookie Thomas Gallagher threw the shot 42 feet for second place.

Sequim’s 4×400 relay squad (Herrera, Travis Decker, Alex Jenkins and Stephen Stilts) finished second with a 3:47 mark.

Sequim’s boys finished with 95 points, less than 10 points in back of third-place Port Angeles.

Sequim tracksters host a nonleague meet March 24 at home, their last action before spring break.

The Wolves are back on the track April 8 at Bremerton against the Knights and North Kitsap Vikings.
