Sequim sends 5 golfers to finals

On target and on to state.

On target and on to state.

Five Sequim High golfers can pack their bags for the class 2A state tourney after earning top-four finishes at the Olympic League Tournament at Gold Mountain Golf Course in Bremerton on May 11, led by 2A league champions Zoei Zbaraschuk and Ryan O’Mera.

Zbaraschuk, a junior who placed seventh at last year’s 2A state tournament, topped the girl’s field – including golfers from the 3A ranks – with a round of 86, eight shots better than Elle Sander of Klahowya.

Teammate Kim Duce placed third with a 96.

O’Mera, a freshman, shot a 76 to lead a trio of Sequim boys to automatic state berths. Seven shots back was runner-up Chad Quinet, a senior who earned his first trip to state, while teammate Colby Rude, a state qualifier in 2007 and 2008, was eight shots back.

Five other Sequim golfers earned top-10 finishes at the league tournament Monday and still have a shot at state berths. They compete at the West Central District 2A divisional tourney, set for May 18 at Fort Lewis Golf Course (results were too late for this edition).

Sequim’s divisional tourney qualifiers include Brendon Gilles, Sean Lindstedt and Taylor Thorson on the boys’ side, and Hailey Estes and Lisa Doan on the girls’ side.

The top four golfers from that tournament advance to state.

The class 2A state tournament is scheduled for May 27-28 at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima.

In 3A Olympic League tourney action last week, Port Angeles’ Tracie Dupuis and Ev Grier earned automatic state bids while Emily Cook, Lauren Coventon and Scott Kilzer advance to the 3A district tournament.
