Geographically, these tennis courts at Erickson Park are clearly in Port Angeles’ city boundaries.
But a host of Sequim players ruled these nets and baselines last week, winning or sharing titles in five of the seven divisions and sweeping the men’s finals berths at the Saundra Kent Tennis Tournament, held Aug. 5-7.
Sequim brother combo Andrew and Reed Gunstone each took titles, with Andrew winning the 3.5 Singles crown by topping Sequim’s Donovan Lee while Reed topped Sequim’s Byron Boots for the 4.5 Singles title.
Boots rebounded to beat Waylon Lam, another Sequim player, in the 4.0 Singles division.
In men’s 5.0 Singles play, Sequim High School coach Douglas Hastings topped SHS grad Kyle McKenzie in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-3).
In the women’s 3.5 Singles division, Katie Terrill topped Sherrie Schouten, who withdrew with an injury.
Valli Quaintance took the Women’s 50 Singles round robin with a pair of wins, and in the only doubles division of the weekend, Sequim’s Jim Adams and Eric Brown of Port Angeles won both of their matches for the round robin division victory.
This weekend (Aug. 12-14) sees doubles action at Erickson Park, with men’s, women’s and mixed doubles divisions.
The 26th annual tournament is named after Saundra Kent, a Port Angeles High School graduate who was one of the first recipients of a scholarship sponsored by the Peninsula Tennis Club.
According to tennis club members, Kent was popular in the community and active in tennis, but after a year in college, she was diagnosed with leukemia and died the same year.
Her memory lives on in the community’s annual tournament and in the scholarships that go to high school seniors from Sequim and Port Angeles high schools.
