Boasting one of the Olympic League’s top defenses,
Sequim’s soccer squad showed last week it can put points on the scoreboard, too.
The Wolves capped a two-win week with a 4-1 nonleague victory against Forks on April 9, getting scores from Evan Watkins, Daniel Servin, Nick Camporini and Saul Flores.
Watkins got things going just six minutes in, taking a cross from teammate Aldo Garcia and putting it past Spartan keeper Omar Sanchez.
Three minutes later, Servin made it 2-0 when he took a Zane Carey pass, juked some defenders and snuck it into the left corner.
Garcia got his second assist of the game in setting up Camporini at the 16-minute mark, finding the Sequim forward at the back post for the 3-0 lead.
Forks got its score at the 53-minute mark when Aron Bronline slipped one past
Sequim keeper Byron Boots.
But Sequim added some insurance with five minutes remaining as Carey found Flores for a score.
The win puts Sequim at 6-1 overall and one game back of league-leading Kingston.
The Wolves were scheduled to play at North Kitsap on April 13 – results were unavailable at press time.
Sequim is at Bremerton on April 20, before hosting rival Port Angeles on April 23.
Wolves shut down Redskins
The best way to rebound from a loss? Beat up on an old rival.
Sequim did exactly that on April 8, knocking off Port Townsend’s Redskins 3-0 at Jefferson County Memorial Field.
John Textor got the first half’s only goal off an assist from Daniel Servin at the 20-minute mark.
David Richards and Mitch McHugh added second-half goals on assists from Carey and Waylon Lam to cap the game while Boots earned the shutout in goal.
It was Sequim’s fourth shutout of the young season.
The Redskins were missing five starters thanks to spring break.
“It wasn’t one of the prettiest games,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said, “but taking a win home from Port Townsend is always a thrill.”

Who needs offense?
Sequim and Kingston showed off two of the best defensive units last week, battling to a scoreless tie through regulation before Chad Trask won it for Kingston in the first overtime.
After failing to score with lobs over the top for the first 80 minutes, the Buccaneers attacked up the middle in the extra period, and Trask snuck one by Sequim keeper Boots for the 1-0 league victory – and Sequim’s first defeat of the season.
“(It was a) good battle,” Brasher said. “They’re a good defending side. It was going to be that way (low scoring) from the start.”
The Wolves certainly had their chances but couldn’t get a clean shot on Buc netminder Spencer Miele, who posted the shutout.
Brasher credited Sequim defenseman Jordy Shearer with a spectacular game in the backfield.
“He’s really picked it up (and) telling guys what to do, which he didn’t do before,” the Sequim coach said.
The Wolves get another chance at the Buccaneers when Sequim travels to Kingston on May 6.
“We didn’t want to put too much emphasis on this game, to get up too high too early,” Brasher said. “It’s a long season. But these guys want to win.”
